10/29/2011 Depot St. Yard Construction Update
Title:  10/29/2011 Depot St. Yard Construction Update
Description:  Most of the heavy equipment has left and the yard is now completely clear of tracks except for the KCS track to the left. I assume the track is temporary given its unnecessary curvature within the yard. The red arrow points to a survey stake where presumably a turnout will be placed. The yellow arrow points to where survey stakes behind the brush are located. In theory, you can line up the red point and yellow point and see where the new UP line will go. The green arrow points to where the current UP line starts curving to the left to go under the Linwood underpass (which you can see behind the I 49 overpass).

Making Room for a New UP Line
Title:  Making Room for a New UP Line
Description:  The old KCS Depot St. yard in Shreveport (used mostly for storing MOW trains) has been almost completely gutted to make way for a UP line that will run to the far right in this picture (just out of frame). The only operational track is a temporary track over by the depot building (now used for non-RR storage). I assume at this point the KCS will relay some track in the yard, since it has dumped lots of new ballast.

Shreveport's UP yard at Levy Street looks forlorn, severed from the KCS junction.
Title:  Shreveport's UP yard at Levy Street looks forlorn, severed from the KCS junction.
Description:  To the left, we see the recently rebuilt "Rabbit Line". Straight ahead, we see the local line that runs from the former KCS Depot Street yard to a Hollywood yard. Approximately 1/2 mile from this spot, this local line and the Rabbit Line cross. In spite of the shiny rails, there is no place behind the photographer for the trains to go.

Looking northeast towards downtown Shreveport, the KCS construction project continues.
Title:  Looking northeast towards downtown Shreveport, the KCS construction project continues.
Description:  One would hardly recognize this area from one year ago. The big cut is where the new double track line to connect with the KCS double track line through the Texas Street cut is being located. The line to the far left is a temporary track, located generally where the actually old line into the yard (that has been removed) was. The grade to the right is where the UP local line is going to be relocated. A large retention pond is to the right, as shown in another picture in this album.

KCS construction project in Shreveport
Title:  KCS construction project in Shreveport
Description:  This view from the Linwood Street overpass shows the northwest end of the construction. The old grade that is being replaced is the "high line." The new grade is down below, and is reportedly going to be double tracked. You can see the base of a bridge that was removed to the left. You can see why they would want to replace the stiff grade on the line currently in use.

KCS Construction in Shreveport - late December 2012
Title:  KCS Construction in Shreveport - late December 2012
Description:  The first of two lines in the new cut is complete, but not operating. To the right, you can see where the new UP line will connect with the new line in the cut. The temporary line (left) is still operational. I posted this photo on January 28, 2013 - and at this time the temporary line is gone, trains are operating in the cut, and the UP line has the track down.

KCS Shreveport Construction Update
Title:  KCS Shreveport Construction Update
Description:  The temporary track to the far left is now gone. The new cut has a single track that is operational, and a second track should be added in the next couple of months. The new track to the right is the Union Pacific connection to a local line. The north end of the "Rabbit Line" is in the far background.

Old and New Union Pacific Lines
Title:  Old and New Union Pacific Lines
Description:  To the bottom right, you can see the old Union Pacific local line that tied into the KCS when there was no cut at this location. Crews are now connecting a new line, with a new curvature. Note how close the track is to the edge of the cut in the one area.

KCS 4773 pulling upgrade through the new cut out of the "Rat Hole"
Title:  KCS 4773 pulling upgrade through the new cut out of the "Rat Hole"
Description:  KCS freight pulls through the new construction site in Shreveport (the "Rat Hole" construction project). The new, but unfinished UP connection is to the left (you can barely see a rail). The closest line was a temporary line that is now severed.

KCS "Rat Hole" Construction
Title:  KCS "Rat Hole" Construction
Description:  View looking southeast from the West Texas Street bridge. The two original "Rat Hole" tracks are to the right. You can see the severed original track that went up into the cut. The turnout for the new track out of the "Rat Hole" is easily seen. The construction crew will take down all the dirt from the old track (where the construction equipment is seen) down to the level of the new track.

KCS "Rat Hole" Construction
Title:  KCS "Rat Hole" Construction
Description:  You can clearly see in this photograph where the second line in the cut will be located. The line with the MOW equipment is the UP connection to the cut, which has not yet been completed. To the very far left, barely visible, it what is left of the temporary bypass.

Title:  North End of the former SSW Line - Construction Project View
Description:  View of long abandoned SSW line that used to go over the KCS "Rat Hole" in Shreveport. The bridge was only recently removed as part of the Rat Hole construction project. The line closest to the camera is the new line coming out of the Rat Hole towards downtown Shreveport.

Title:  Survey stakes mark where the new UP line will go.
Description:  Standing under I 49 and looking towards downtown Shreveport, you can see the survey stakes for where the new UP line will go. The stack train you see in the background (mostly obscured by brush) is at the far north end of the UP "Rabbit Line."

The path west blocked by building rubble.
Title:  The path west blocked by building rubble.
Description:  For the last few years, a company has been dumping huge heaps of dirt, brick and concrete in an area adjacent to the Depot St. yard. The overpass in the background is Linwood Ave. The red survey stake apparently marks where the new UP line will go through. I wonder if a "cut" will result.
