Why There is Little Railroad Crime
Title:  Why There is Little Railroad Crime
Description:  This is the Kansas City Southern police dog used in Shreveport. It is the biggest German Shepherd I have ever seen, and trust me, no miscreant is going to challenge this dog.

"Don't Worry, We'll Wait"
Title:  "Don't Worry, We'll Wait"
Description:  This man with a shopping cart came up along side the train, and I was surprised the crew could see him. They obviously did. They appeared to start then they throttled down. The man passed in front, then the train immediately went on its way.

Not Worried About The Train
Title:  Not Worried About The Train
Description:  Placing a box beside your head (and between you and the locomotive) is not the smartest way to cross in front of a freight train. The train was just starting up when this guy jogged in front of the train.

Breezing Through Shreveport on a Flat Car
Title:  Breezing Through Shreveport on a Flat Car
Description:  This guy was even set up with a homemade chair. I saw this guy a few days before (because he had on the same jacket) board the third locomotive of a train moving through Wilson Alley.

The Wrong Way to Get to the Rescue Mission
Title:  The Wrong Way to Get to the Rescue Mission
Description:  The Shreveport Rescue Mission moved downtown earlier this year. One way to get to the Mission from downtown involves cutting across three railroad tracks. The gentleman under the boxcar ladder was literally stuck - he had a lot of trouble getting out. The man looking to his left was looking at an approaching freight train. I'm not a big fan of the Rescue Mission's move (and most of the cops that have this beat tell me the same thing). I've seen toddlers playing on the tracks while parents watch, parents watching their kids throw ballast rocks and trains and businesses nearby, and many patrons cutting through parked trains.

Why Cross Here? (Alternate Routes)
Title:  Why Cross Here? (Alternate Routes)
Description:  This slightly blurred (it was misting) photo illustrates my "alternate route" theory -- that people often take the route through train tracks when there are easier, non-railroad property routes available. There is absolutely no point of anyone being down where these folks were. On either side of this bridge over Interstate 20, there are safe overpasses for cars with sidewalks. Moreover, there is nothing behind these folks other than three tracks with high brush on either side. Yet, I see people using this three track line as a shortcut. Problems: (1) to the left just out of photo range ruffians hang out drinking (and who knows what else) under the overpass from which I shot this picture. There literally is a six foot deep pile of their trash, consisting mostly of liquor bottles and beer cans. (2) The obvious - you're standing in the middle of a three track main line. (3) There is no way out to the left without going across the bridge and only a difficult way to the right.

Railroad Engineer Averts Tragedy
Title:  Railroad Engineer Averts Tragedy
Description:  This area, at the end of Jordan St. just west of downtown Shreveport, is regularly used by persons to cross the three track KCS line. The unofficial crossing is between a bus stop and the Louisiana State Office Building, and traffic going between the two places generates a lot of the foot traffic. On this day, a series of bad coincidences almost led to tragedy but for the quick action of the engineer. KCS 3151's freight was stopped where it is in this picture. The UP train was moving up the grade. Two couples got off the bus and started to cross. The first couple, unencumbered by a child, had already cleared the tracks. The first couple had also rushed to cross, apparently believing KCS 3151 was about to start. When the second couple (in the pic) saw the first couple speed up, they started to hurriedly cross in front of the KCS train - not knowing that a moving UP freight was concealed by the KCS train. The quick thinking KCS engineer stepped in front of the second couple right before I took this pic and calmly and quietly stopped them. Had he not intervened, the couple and their child would have been struck.

Casual Hopper Ride Through Wilson Alley
Title:  Casual Hopper Ride Through Wilson Alley
Description:  I posted this on my "manwithscaryspouse" webshots pages and got a lecture about how this guy really wouldn't have been doing anything that unsafe had he been a railroad employee. I won't get in that debate again. This trespasser was riding between cars on a freight train moving about 25 mph.

Not a Good Way To Spend July 4
Title:  Not a Good Way To Spend July 4
Description:  These two women took two minutes to hoist, cajole and heave this OCCUPIED stroller across a KCS two-track line. There was a nicely paved grade crossing 10 yards away (you can see the crossing light to the right). There was a KCS train idling, lights on, to their left.

Trespassing itinerant foolishly scoots across railroad bridge
Title:  Trespassing itinerant foolishly scoots across railroad bridge
Description:  A KCS freight trains rumbles by a passing itinerant who is crossing the I 20 railroad bridge in Shreveport to get to a hangout underneath the Murphy Street overpass on the other side of the bridge. A well meaning man had hired four of these itinerants (who use the Murphy St. overpass as a drinking spot) to haul trash out from the hangout. Channel 12 even aired a story on the clean up, as the Murphy Street overpass had become a huge eyesore. The reporter, do gooder and itinerants were all oblivious to the danger of passing trains. KCS police eventually issued a trespass warning to the reporter, but after the officer left, the trash clean up and bridge crossing continued.

Do Gooders Put Kids in Harm's Way
Title:  Do Gooders Put Kids in Harm's Way
Description:  Do gooders who feed some men who drink on one side of a railroad bridge are pictured here on their return to their cars. I cannot imagine that the KCS would give them permission to use the bridge and the KCS certainly would not give them permission to have kids in the middle of the bridge. The adults never looked back at the kids (or for trains) the entire time they were going back over the bridge. Note the amber signal which means that a train is coming up the grade behind them.

Double Danger: Stuck Under Car as Train Approaches
Title:  Double Danger: Stuck Under Car as Train Approaches
Description:  Two vagrants in trouble - the man under the car is physically incapable of getting unwedged under the step of the box car. The train he is under started moving less than one minute after this picture was taken. The man standing is doing a side glance to his left because a train is approaching on the second track.

As KCS train approaches, kid on bicycleplays "chicken."
Title:  As KCS train approaches, kid on bicycleplays "chicken."
Description:  His friends were telling him to "get off the tracks" as the train approached. About five seconds after this picture was taken, he turned sideways and the wheel of his bicycle stuck between the rail and grade crossing. He had even been taunting the train. Even when I shouted "you need to get off the track", he just stood there.

As the Krewe of Centaur Mardi Gras parade moves forward, a staggering derelict trespasses across the Red River Swing Bridge.
Title:  As the Krewe of Centaur Mardi Gras parade moves forward, a staggering derelict trespasses across the Red River Swing Bridge.
Description:  As the Krewe of Centaur Mardi Gras parade gets underway to greet the 300,000 spectators who are ready to receive the beads and baubles, a foolhardy drifter uses the Red River Swing Bridge as a shortcut. The police were too busy watching the revelers to notice the man's slow journey across a dangerous shortcut.

Gasoline truck cuts it a "little" close.
Title:  Gasoline truck cuts it a "little" close.
Description:  The gates are dropping, the train (thankfully not moving at full track speed) is moving ... so why is the truck in the middle of the crossing? The track you see closest is a siding. The track that the train is on is right in front of the nose of the truck.
